Peridot and Spinel – August Birthstones
Did you know that in 2016, spinel was added as an August birthstone? Now August babies and their loved ones have two beautiful choices when it comes to birthstone jewelry.
The original August birthstone, peridot has a beautiful grassy-green color. In fact, it very closely matches the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year – Greenery. It has been found all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica.
Peridot has a hardness between 6.5 and 7, so it will be scratched by stones like sapphires and diamonds. It is great for earrings and pendants. It can make a great ring or bracelet, but care must be taken. Peridot can be damaged by high heat, acids, solvents, and certain abrasives. It can be cleaned at home with mild soap and a toothbrush.
Below you can see the peridot jewelry we have in stock. We also have a large selection of loose peridot gems waiting to be made into the perfect custom piece.
Spinel, the newcomer, can be found in a variety of colors. It is most commonly seen as a beautiful red.
Spinel has a hardness of 8, so it is relatively resistant to abrasion. Intense heat can fade the color, but it is relatively safe with acids and solvents. However, it is still not recommended to wear jewelry while cleaning or swimming in a pool. It is okay to clean at home with soap and a toothbrush, as well as at your local jeweler’s with the ultrasonic and steam cleaner.
These gorgeous, handmade filigree earrings make a wonderful gift. We also have loose spinel in stock for whatever you have in mind.
