Pearl and Alexandrite – June Birthstones

It’s June, and that means June birthdays! Those lucky people have two beautiful and unique June birthstones to choose between. Which one is your favorite?

Pearls

The first of the June birthstones we’ll look at is pearl. There are a variety of types and sources of pearl, all beautiful in their own right. Most pearls that are commercially available are cultured (that is, they are farmed). Naturally occurring pearls are extremely rare. The main markers of quality are the smoothness of the shape and the quality of the nacre: the translucent outer coating of the pearl.

Pearls have a hardness between 2.5 and 4.5, so they scratch more easily than many gemstones. For this reason, they should not be worn regularly in rings and bracelets. They can also be damaged by heat, acids, solvents, and abrasives, so don’t wear your pearl jewelry while cleaning the house. Pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap, and strands of pearls should be restrung about once a year if they get any kind of regular wear or if they are hung for storage.

Below you can see the freshwater pearl jewelry we have in stock. We can also fill a custom order if you have something special in mind.

Alexandrite

This beautiful and rare stone has an incredible unique property: it color changes across the color wheel. Instead of a subtle change, as is more common, alexandrite will change from teal green to a purplish-red.

Alexandrite has a hardness of 8.5. You should avoid sudden temperature changes, but it is very durable. It is okay to clean at home with soap and a toothbrush, as well as at your local jeweler’s with the ultrasonic and steam cleaner.

While we don’t have any finished alexandrite jewelry in stock, we will be more than happy to order in or custom make a piece to celebrate your loved one’s June birthday.
